Abstract Unsteady three-dimensional flow structures are present in the majority of flows of academic and industrial interest. Even though computational fluid dynamics has achieved substantial progress in the last two decades, experimental approaches of these complex flow phenomena remain essential for understanding of the physics of the fluid flow mechanics and to investigate industrial problems. The aim of this project is to join the Laboratoire de Mécanique de Lille (LML), France, PIV research group during one year for participating in a experimental study of the near wall region of a three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer with temporal and spatial resolution of the flow. Three components of velocity will be measured in a volume using a high repetition rate Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (Tomo-PIV), which is a recently introduced tool for three-component three-dimensional velocity field measurements. The technique is based on the tomographic reconstrution of instantaneous volumetric particle field intensity distributions from multiple simultaneous two-dimensional projections or views of the measurement volume. The experiment will be conducted in the LML boundary layer wind tunnel, which was specially designed for optical measurements techniques. Due to its complexity, this experiment will take around one year to be accomplished. Since a Time Resolved PIV system has just been acquired by the Instituto de Aeronáutica e Espaço (IAE), this post-doctoral research will bring a significant contribution to the wind tunnel activities currently planned at the institute. The experience acquired abroad will allow a more effective use of this recently purchased system. (AU) | |
