Abstract

This project proposes a survey of the theatre produced in Portugal under the influence of Naturalism in the three last decades of the XIX century and its unfolding up to the 1920´s, mostly by means of the analysis of some chosen plays written by Portuguese playwrights that, although well known in Portugal, are still little known in the Brazilian academic and artistic milieu: Guerra Junqueiro, Guilherme de Azevedo, Marcelino Mesquita, Abel Botelho, Eduardo Schwalbach, D. João da Câmara and the couple Júlio and Raul Brandão at the end of the XIX century; Coelho de Carvalho, Manuel Laranjeira, Henrique Lopes de Mendonça, Ponce de Leão, Ramada Curto, Vitoriano Braga, Carlos Selvagem and Alfredo Cortez already in the XX century. The idea that grounds this research is that in drama, naturalist aesthetics with its bent for bringing up social problems and the righteous bourgeois’s psychic degenerations opened up the paths for modern dramaturgy, strengthening its late XIX century revolt against Naturalism.
