Perceptions About Students’ School Trajectories in Elementary Education: Contexts, Times and Relations

Abstract

This research intended to continue the study developed during Masters by monitoring school trajectories from the same students found in that occasion. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the continuity of schooling for students who presented, at some stage, high, average and low performances, and examine the possibility of changes and/or stabilities in conceptions and expectations from teachers, family and students about the academic performance of those. The methodology of data collection for this research was proposed over the course of two years, 2011 and 2012. Initially, the acompanied students were found in schools from a city in the State of Sao Paulo. They were divided into three educational units, one from Elementary School and two others which attended Middle School students. In the second year of data collection, another Elementary School was added, because one of the accompanied students moved to it, totaling four institutions. Eleven students and their respective families took part in this study, which compounded the Master’s dissertation. The teachers were selected under the criteria of having ministered classes to these students, and, by the end of the second year of data collection, twenty-three teachers had participated, through teaching classes as pedagogues or being responsible for reinforcement classes (Elementary School) or the disciplines of Portuguese and Mathematics (Middle School). As a source of information, it was used along two years: interviews, classroom observations and board meetings. There were also the obtaining of school documents, such as report cards, student’s activities, records of disciplinary incidents, documents about the organization of the schools. Besides, in 2012, a questionnaire was applied aiming to characterize the classes in which the students were enrolled.
