Abstract

This research discusses the modern house production in João Pessoa city between 1950 and 1960, period of diffusion of modern Brazilian architecture in the country. To this end, it begins with an investigation of the ideas involved in formulating an idea of Brazilian (modern) House. Next, we analyze the local board in order to understand the ways to constitute an receptive background to modern architecture - at a time that precedes the arrival of architects or the opening of Schools of Architecture - the first opened paths to residence renewal, the consolidation of city expansion. For this, we attempted to rescue the relationship between city and architecture through a reading that relies on notes published in local journals and analysis of modern houses projects designed by architects. It appears that, in the house production, the modernity in Joao Pessoa in the 1950\'s echoed the canonical language of modern Brazilian architecture, while the production of 1960\'s accompanied the shift of the discussion to São Paulo.
