Abstract

The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the pianistic writing in Ernst Mahle's songs, taking as a starting point his songs composed for voice and piano with secular texts. The analytical approach is based on Stein and Spillman (1996), whose model for the analysis of Lieder considers the interaction of text and music. Since Mahle employs a pluralistic musical language that combines traditional modes and scales and atonal structures, the theoretical approach employed is based on Kostka (2006) and Straus (1990, 2013), with set theory used for the study of atonal structures. The resulting data allows us to delve into particular aspects in the composer's pianistic writing and offers subsidies for the performance of the songs that were recorded, and appear on the attached CD. The work contributes to the academic research and to enlarge the existing bibliography, by proposing a reflection on the interpretation of the Brazilian chamber songs of the 20th and 21st centuries, based on the study of Ernst Mahle's works (AU)
