| Abstract | |
This thesis aims at developing the notion of translation as work of art as it is discussed in the context of Antoine Berman's critical and theoretical work. The discussion focuses on the two main lines that frame his most important assumptions: a particular view on criticism and work of art, derived from his reading and interpretation of the ideas of the German Romanticism, and his experience with Latin America, where, from 1970 to 1975, Berman received a strong impact both from certain aspects of the Peronist movement and from certain traditional manifestations of conviviality which he experienced in the contact with the Argentinians at the time. Additionally, a discussion is presented on how this Romantic framework little by little starts to be enclosed by an ethics of conviviality, which stemmed from his Latin-American experiences and from its implications both for a reshaping of the notion of the autonomy of literary translation and of its critical status as well as for a reconsideration of the place of translation in the French context in which the author is inscribed. Therefore, besides presenting a reading of Berman's critical and theoretical work from the point of view of its process of development, this work also manifests the particular way in which his work approaches contemporary questions which are still very lively and pressing both in the disciplinary field of Translation Studies and in the field of literary criticism, history and theory (AU) | |
