Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to reexamine the importance of the Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro for the Luso-Brazilian monarchy during the years of D. Joao VI's residence in Brazil (1808-1821). The approach is transatlantic, in keeping with the fact that the newspaper was read on both sides of the Atlantic throughout this period. Because the Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro is considered by Brazilian historians to be the country's first newspaper, the dissertation investigates how it was thought of at the time and what this tells us about the journalistic tradition to which it belonged. To this end we identify what the paper's editorials tell us about the period, the role of the readers in the production and reception of the news, and the relationship between the understanding of the newspaper's role and the principal political issues that were publicly debated during D. Joao's regency (AU)
