Abstract

The present thesis is an ethnography of economic practices of a peasant group of the Tejo River Basin, Brazilian Amazon. It focus on exchange relations, in particular those called "ajuda" (help). Peasants define a range of relations as "ajuda" and the term points to relations based on reciprocity. I suggest that "ajuda" relations are not altruistic or unselfish and also that they are not limited to local communities. One can also establish "ajuda" relations with traders and politicians. Thus, based on local practices and views, I propose a model of relations to explain exchange. The model intends to explain relations between different actors as based on the same values. These values are close related to expected behaviours between exchange partners. I also point to affective features of the model, making exchange between partners also acts of production of people. "Consideração" (consideration, or esteem) and kinship play a part on this affective and economic model. The thesis is based on fieldwork data and on literature review, mainly those works about the Upper Juruá region and those in dialogue with Economic Anthropology (AU)
