Abstract

The initial problem of the discussing issues in this thesis can be summarized in the following question: how could images educate us? To answer it, however, it is necessary to take a step back, which is to return to the roots that sustain the solution of this question. This thesis is based on Plato¿s theoretical framework, which is being divided into three chapters. The first chapter inserts the education through the images within an educational route, which is illustrated in the Republic. Images due to its sensitive and aesthetic character mark the initial stage of this route. The second chapter is dedicated to the examination of the ontological statute of images in three approaches or ways: imitation, knowledge and moralization. The images, which are sensitive representations of intelligible objects, are closer to the truth and the Form of the Good when more symmetrical these objects. The third chapter shows how images are able to introduce or extract the moral virtues in the soul. These images guide the soul to good and proper conduct to the State (AU)
