Abstract

The thesis focuses on the experience of suburban workers in Rio de Janeiro, from 1890 to 1920. At the turn of the twentieth century, the Federal Capital was facing several changes, including the end of slavery, the beginning of industrialization, and the urban reforms carried out during the administrations of Pereira Passos and Rodrigues Alves. During this period, the suburban area of the city experienced significant population growth. In relation to this, the research investigated the profile of the new inhabitants of the suburbs, including their occupations. The housing dimension of their experience was examined through the analysis of conflicts between them and landlords. The study of the long-lived Sociedade Progresso do Engenho de Dentro, initially concerned with recreational activities but which came to offer mutual aid, provided information about the leisure and the associative practices of the suburban workers of Rio de Janeiro. Finally, the analysis of legal cases for battery and minor offenses, especially vagrancy, revealed the areas of greater police surveillance in the suburbs, and features of the conflicts that led to these cases. The identification of how the characteristics of the suburban area influenced the analysis pervaded all chapters. In other words, the suburb was not merely treated as a scenario but as a key part to understanding the object of study. In this sense, the use of historical GIS has offered valuable contribution to the research, because it brought sophistication to the analysis of the spatiality of suburban workers¿ history. This research is based on several sources: census data, civil and criminal legal cases, the suburban press, newspapers, and statutes of suburban associations, amongst others (AU)
