Abstract

This thesis presents a systematic study of Samuel Rawet’s early short stories, here delimited as an ensemble formed by Contos do imigrante (Tales of the Immigrant) (1956), his debut book, and his other short stories published on newspapers and magazines until 1956. The objective in this research is to comprehend the literary procedures and the thematic-formal values of the author’s initial production within the short story genre. The methodology applied in this research corresponds to the articulation of an immanentist analytic-interpretative reading with aspects of short story theory. A documental research has also been performed in primary sources, which provided a mapping of Rawet’s short stories publications in the periodical press. In the external dramatic action plan, which comprehends the conflict between the character and the dramatic situation in the present time of the story, the research has demonstrated that Rawet’s early stories meet Poe’s unity demand (1984) by privileging a significant episode. However, Rawet’s short stories break the limitation of the significant episode’s unity by inserting an internal dramatic action that composes a conflict between the character and the reminisced facts. Such dramatic action, through selective omniscience and indirect speech, is transferred to the narrative’s foreground. Furthermore, this study has shown that the events remembered by the protagonists reconstitute their lives in a synecdochical form. Therefore, even though the present in the narratives is composed by minimal episodes, the short stories condense a life experience much bigger than the one concluded in the present. (AU)
