Abstract

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different modes of photoactivation in the nanohardness and elastic modulus of resin cements and adhesives, as well as the effect on the color stability of ceramic laminates. The factors of the studies were: two levels of light curing units (VALO – Ultradent; Radii-Cal – SDI) and three modes of photoactivation (without prior curing of the adhesive system in the tooth surface and inside of the ceramic laminate, prior curing the adhesive system only in the tooth surface, and prior curing of the adhesive system in the tooth surface and within the ceramic laminate). In the analysis of color stability the third factor of the study was the aging time (252, 504 and 756 hours). One hundred and thirty two ceramic blocks (7x8x0.6mm) of lithium dissilicate (IPS e-max CAD) were made, which were cemented on the enamel of bovine teeth, and distributed into 12 groups according to the restorative materials (Single Bond Universal/RelyX Veneer – 3M/ESPE and Excite DSC/Variolink Veneer – Ivoclar Vivadent) and methods of procedures. The mechanical properties of nanohardness and elastic modulus were measured using a nanohardness tester (Anton Paar) under loaf of 1000 μN (n=3). Color stability was measured using a UV-2450 visible UV spectrophotometer (Shimadzu) before and after the submission of the UVB artificial accelerated aging samples (n=8). Data of color stability and mechanical properties were submitted to statistical testes of normality and analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey´s test (α=0.05). The results showed that, in relation to the different behaviors depending of the protocol used. For the Single Bond Universal / RelyX Veneer adhesive system, previous activation adhesive system contained only in the dental enamel with Valo polywave light curing unit showed more satisfactory results. For the Tetric N Bond / Variolink Veneer system, the different protocols did not show significant alteration in the analyzed properties. In general, Valo polywave light curing unit promoted better mechanical properties than Radii-Cal singlewave light curing unit, for color stability there was no difference in the use of different light curing units.
