Abstract

The question of this research refers to the specificity of the workers employed in the construction/maintenance of bridges and roads in the province of Minas Gerais (1834-1888). Using this universe of work, we intend to analyze the process of transition from slave labor to free labor. The construction of roads led to the intensive participation of labor force, as well as of engineers, besides the financial condition of the province for investments in infrastructure. These works involved a specific web of actors: provincial assembly, provincial president, engineers and contractors of the works. Based on the employed individuals, we observed the concomitant presence of free workers, freedmen, slaves, free Africans and immigrants, the occupational structure, and the dominance and persistence of the slave rental system. Bridges and roads indicate the absence of legislation banning the use of captives; the interaction between politics and road constructions; the explanatory limits of the "railroad, agroexport and wage labor" model and the qualitative and quantitative profile of the slave renting owners (AU)
