Abstract

This research has proposed an investigation on the dramaturgy of José Joaquim de Campos Leão, also known as Qorpo-Santos (1829-1933), focusing on his bonds with the Brazilian theatre of the 1800¿s, specially related to the popular theatrical genres. The dramatist from Brazil¿s South region corresponds to a curious case of our theatrical historiography, as his literary work has been taken by the scholarly people of the XIX century as a pure disparate; however, in the XX century, some theatre critics and researchers classified this theatrical production as innovative, aligned with the modern aesthetics. The hypothesis emerged in this research is based on the idea that the singularity of the author, sanctioned both by the 1800¿s critics and the XX and XXI century researchers, isn¿t due to a radical distancing to the aesthetics trends of its time, but acutally due to circumstances of social and aesthetic traits that have made the comprehension of his works unviable with his contemporaries. This way, there has been developed a historical study of the complete Qorpo Santo¿s theatre constitution ¿ considering its seventeen comedies -, through the documental investigation of its literary oeuvre A Ensiqlopédia and some other journals of the XIX century. On the first source, we have searched for information about the aesthetics information of Qorpo-Santo, as well as marks of accordance among its various writings and comedies. On the second source, we¿ve gathered the theatre announcements and critics, which have shown the aesthetics trends and beliefs present in the author¿s cultural environment ¿ the period is from 1851 until 1877. We aimed, this way, grasp concrete references that enable the evaluation of disparity and alikeness between his own dramaturgy and the one from this time, contributing to a new critical look upon the theatre of Qorpo-Santo (AU)
