Peripheral women's movement in São Paulo's East Zone: political cycles, discursive networks and counterpublics

Abstract

This dissertation¿s theme is the women¿s associativism at the outskirts of the São Paulo¿s East Zone and its relationship with nonformal education. Two political cycles are compared: "Popular Feminism" and "Peripheral Feminism". To that end, the concept of "discursive matrixes" was chosen as the main framework, understood as the public spheres that enable the everyday life¿s symbolic elaboration and the collective action¿s emergence against unfair social situations. The main procedure were semi-structured interviews; and in the case of the collectives that constitute the second cycle, complementary techniques were mobilized: participant observation, Facebook pages¿ network analysis and online campaign¿s content analysis. The achieved results point to complex and heterogeneous relations between the cycles. From a societal point of view, the discontinuities prevail: three discursive matrixes were identified for the first cycle (Church Communities; feminist NGOs; and samba schools) and two other matrixes were identified for the second cycle (cultural movements and digital public spheres¿ feminisms). But there are continuities if one considers a discursive dimension (black feminism went from secondary to hegemonic) and a political-institutional dimension (the institutionalization of treatment of women in violent situations has paradoxically opened space to less institutional practices) (AU)
