Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the functioning of missionary discourse in contemporary age. In order to do this, it analyzes the evangelistic campaigns of the Brazilian Baptist Convention, realized by its worldwide and national mission boards. This analysis is based in the theoretical postulates of Discourse Analysis, more specifically, in the postulations of Dominique Maingueneau about the Constituent Discourses and the Global Semantics. The research corpus is a set of materials from campaigns of Baptist mission boards. The first chapter discusses the constitution of Protestantism in Brazil. The second chapter presents the notions of Constituent Discourses, Global semantics, Stereotypes, Discursive memory and Ethos. The third chapter examines the theories about Baptist church beginning. The fourth chapter analyzes the discursive image of baptists and non-baptists in campaigns of mission boards. The fifth chapter discusses how baptist discourse presents itself as a solution for social problems, as poverty. The sixth chapter analyzes the Brazilian image in campaigns of national mission board. Later, the next chapter analyzes the image of Indians in missionary campaigns. Finally, the eighth chapter analyzes the world image in campaigns of worldwide mission board. This thesis shows baptist discourse defends itself as responsible for saving the world. This position is derived from a position of the religious discourse as a constituent discourse, which proposes itself as a guardian of the true faith. In order to do this, the Baptist discourse builds an image of its other as the one that needs to be evangelized/saved. This image is sustained by one range of stereotypes and simulacrums (AU)
