Abstract

The present dissertation investigates, from the study of the trajectory of three black men: Isidoro da Silva Cobra, Mirabeau Joaquim Ludovico and Casemiro Luiz de Abreu and the course of a black association: the Clube 28 de Setembro, the presence of other men and women Blacks in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais, in the post-abolition period. Due to the diversity of sources used ¿ the press, the black press, diaries, letters, minutes and statutes, photographs and memorialist literature ¿ it was possible to uncover important aspects of how the Local black population lived, thought and interpreted the world around them. Focusing on the experiences of the black group associated with the Clube 28 de Setembro, this study illuminated associative practices and projects developed by members of the association. Through these practices and active political positioning, the group sought to affirm and consolidate positive black identities in opposition to the whitening ideologies that shaped and guided the racial partner relations of society at that time. Thus, this research aims to contribute to the historiography that has recently been investigating the black and the construction of ethnic-racial identities and policies in the post-abolition period, as well as to highlight some strategies undertaken by a certain black group at the beginning of the nineteenth century In the search for economic and social elevation, and aiming to construct spaces and ethnic-racial identities that value the community as a whole (AU)
