Abstract

Based on the analysis, mostly, of cinematographic productions from the Italian filmmaker Dario Argento, this master research has as main goal the study of the reverberation of the visual culture images in his cinema. His films, in general, work with constant allusions to fine arts and architecture. In the universes revealed on each of his productions it is possible to identify images that sometimes are shown as part of the décor, through visual citation or in the constitution of the mise-en-scène. The use of arts, however, is not done like in other cinema genres. By being inserted in horror cinema, they articulate as living and pulsatings beings. Films like L¿uccello dalle piume di cristallo (1970) and La sindrome di Stendhal (1996) introduce the issue of the work of art as a trigger of traumas and fear. In Profondo Rosso (1975) and Il Fantasma dell¿Opera (1998) Argento recriates, respectively, Edward Hopper¿s and George de La Tour¿s paintings. Suspiria (1977) and Trauma (1993) respond to the headhunters and femmes fatales imagery. In a similar way, the scenographic spaces and architecture are presented also as an element of horror. There, between liberty buildings and abandoned houses, Argento explores the aspects of ornament as a mechanism of fear, so that the haunted house theme is highlighted. Modern architecture, in contrast, is showed like a space of voyeurism and constant observation. All those elements are expressed in Argento¿s films. His works for television and operas, like Macbeth and Lucia di Lammermoor, also flirt the visual arts universe. The scope of this work is, therefore, to identify the recurrent visual elements in his cinema, through the reading and understanding of his films, as well of the artistic and cultural references used (AU)
