Abstract

Gilles Deleuze says that his interest in David Hume "is due to the fact that there are deep elements there for a new image of thought." The theme of the image of thought is characteristically Deleuzean. It concerns the question: what does it mean to think, considering bêtise as a condition of thought as a simple faculty; but also of the problem of the philosophical beginnings, of the philosophical foundations. Now, what are such deep elements that Deleuze finds in Hume; and how does this allow a re-reading of Humean philosophy? Determined to enquiry on the connection between these two philosophies, I decided to study Deleuze's studies on Humean philosophy, reconsidering some of Hume's own texts. What unfolds is a study on philosophical studies: on the justification, interest, and the practical value of philosophy; but also on the relation between philosophy and its history. I do not intend to reduce Deleuze to commentator of Humean philosophy, nor to confine Hume to Deleuzean questions; only to explore some resonances between these two great philosophies. This would be a particular form of the question about the interest of philosophical studies (AU)
