Abstract

Taking the idea of ??"formation of Brazil" as a category and structure of feeling that modulated an important part of Brazilian artistic and intellectual production throughout the 20th century, we seek to understand its place in contemporary times. Its program, broadly speaking, had as its horizon the junction of politics and culture in order to conform a new civilization: the Brazilian. A tradition, therefore, with a "civilizing" effort and projected into the future; which would have already "arrived", without the utopia of a Brazilian civilization having actually been realized. It is not by chance that it is a common idea among scholars of the idea of ??"the formation of Brazil" and its respective cultural tradition that such a model is faced with limits: on the one hand, its diagnoses no longer have the same critical strength as in other times; on the other hand, and as a result, their prognosis is significantly affected, emerging as illusory. That said, it is discussed how artists and intellectuals informed by this tradition are working with the erosion of old values, as well as with the emergence of new actors, rationalities and epistemologies in the contemporary political-cultural scene. In this sense, we chose to study the novel Estorvo by Chico Buarque and the film Aquarius, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. We sought to establish, through a comparison and analysis of the works, a fruitful perspective for the understanding of the impasses that the idea of ??"formation of Brazil" has faced today, trying to think on them also in articulation with the modernization processes and projects carried out in Brazil (AU)
