Abstract

This work presents the Argentine journal Pasado y Presente (1963-1965/ 1973) and the Brazilian journal Presença (1983-1992) as its central object. Both attempts brought together Marxist-inspired intellectuals who sought to offer a space for critically elaborating the dilemmas posed by the contexts of de-democratization or democratization in which they were located, independently of party directions. Despite the two-decade gap, we consider them comparable according to the following common objectives: 1) rethink the history of their countries based on historical-cultural analogies promoted by Gramscian categories and 2) the mobilization of these same categories, modifying their original meaning or expanding it in order to produce new interpretations. Thus, the production of Argentine and Brazilian Gramscians will be analyzed in order to develop what we call different parameters of translatability - 1) approximation of cultures through historical analogy and 2) invention of categories. We will seek to demonstrate the path through which the editorial collectives were constituted, the particular way in which they appropriated great general conceptions – of Gramsci's thought in particular, but also of the previous national strands – and, finally, to evaluate the reach of their results. With this, our intention is to contribute to the general reflection regarding the conditions of theoretical production – that is, the possibilities of translation – in national contexts considered peripherals, from the reception of the Gramscian work (AU)
