Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the history of Latin American popular education, seeking to analyse from the notion of remembrance, as presented by Walter Benjamin in On the Concept of History, in the struggles of popular movements linked to this education. Our starting point is a literature dedicated to the study of the memory and history of popular education combined with interviews with popular educators who have systematized experiences in Latin America during the last decades. The main focus of the research is the period between the 1960s and 1980s, with Brazil as the main axis of analysis in dialogue with other experiences in the continent. Our study starts from popular education with an emancipatory meaning, which historically asserts itself as an alternative to hegemonic education and to the system itself, by pointing out as horizon the emancipation of the oppressed classes, claiming these as protagonists of their practices and also of their history (AU)
