Abstract

This study is focused on the analysis of the Umbandist religion development, which consists of two essentials groups: the Christian-Spiritist and the Afro-Brazilian. Both groups have participants, rituals, practices and speeches that mark their differences or proximities. Inserted in a religious scenario with continuous transformations (rise of evangelicals, decrease in the number of Catholics and increase in the number of Spiritists), the umbanda is immersed in flows that mark an open context to symbolic disputes by speeches and followers. The evangelical rise, not only in numbers, but at the cultural level, is the main element of change in the Brazilian religious scene, directly reaching umbanda. The objective of this work is to investigate both the strength of the Umbanda field and its porosity, in order to understand how this field is influenced by other religions in the Brazilian religious field. In this sense, the affirmation of Umbanda as a Christian could act by creating identification and encouraging the individual declaration as an adept, transforming Christian elements into signs of distinction and legitimacy. On the other hand, the appreciation of Candomblé's African cultural identity could lead Umbandists to follow a path considered more "authentic" and "pure". Therefore, the hypothesis is that these two groups (Christian-Spiritist and Afro-Brazilian) are being guided by paths external to the Umbanda field, the Christian aspects and Candomblé, so the speeches are signified by disputes that are external to Umbanda, but still in the Brazilian religious field. The research methodology includes fieldwork and interviews with the leaders of terreiros and their members (AU)
