Abstract

This thesis investigates the experiences of urbanization in the São Paulo's neighborhoods of Santa Ifigênia and Liberdade between 1886 and 1923. Departing from this focus, the goal of this research is to discuss the thesis about the modernization of São Paulo during this period of intense economic development boom. From this dimension, the study discusses the formulation of the concept of modernization in historiography about the capital of São Paulo, and the connections of this discussion with the urban reforms' historiography of Western¿s 19th century. Both neighborhoods are located at the expansion vectors towards the west and south from the historical centrality of the city, from which they are contiguous. These neighborhoods have been selected to this comparative analysis considering the dynamic role they had in the urban expansion at that time and because they are particularly different from the usual imaginary about the urbanization of the paulista capital. They don't had a straight specialized segregation - the neighborhoods were homes for different social classes and had shops and little workshops. I discuss the dynamics of occupation and densification of these territories and how they are intertwined with the urban experiences of those who inhabited them, as well as the processes involved in the formation of their demographic composition. We examine the multiple dimensions that permeate the building of urban space, reflecting about issues related to the expansion, morphology and implementation of urban infrastructure equipment. This research cross referenced several historical sources as an analysis strategy to address the urban dissensual multifacetting. The main sources are the criminal records of Arquivo do Tribunal de Justiça de São Paulo and the official proposals and architectural plans to private constructions available at the Arquivo Histórico de São Paulo. With this analysis, we seek make it clear that the constitution of these neighborhoods was permeated by conflicts that are recorded in its urban form. Those conflicts were not only local, reverberating the implications of coloniality in the structuring of relations between/ intra classes, crossed by the racial relations dynamics related to the processes of overthrow and abolition of black slavery and massive European immigration (AU)
