Abstract

This work aims to determine the age of shells and sediments of different layers of the Sambaqui Santa Marta II, located in the region of Laguna, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Samples of shells and sediments from layers of different depths were collected to the point closest to the center of the sambaqui. The sediments were dated by Thermoluminescence (TL) method. The shells were dated by the Electro Spin Resonance (ESR) method at ESR laboratory - University of Palermo, Italy, and two shells samples were dated by Radiocarbon using the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique by the Beta Analytic laboratory. For reconstruction of the accumulated dose in TL and ESR techniques, the additive method was used. The annual dose of sediment of each layer was obtained through the gamma spectroscopy technique, the results presented values between 1.17 and 2.11 mGy/year. The ages of the shells using the EPR and Radiocarbon method, considering the uncertainties, are approximately the same order of magnitude, around 3.3 thousand years. Although the stratigraphic depth of the sediments is not directly proportional to the ages obtained, probably due to the high destruction rate of this Sambaqui, the ages obtained are between 2.0 and 4.0 thousand years The results of the ages of the shells and sediments collected in the layer closest to the center of sambaqui are 3.8 and 4.1 thousand years respectively. This is estimated to be the initial construction age of Sambaqui Santa Marta II. (AU)
