Abstract

Evangelical philanthropy has been seen or as a means for persuading people to go to the churches or as a means for the defense of the social perception of denominations in public disputes. However, a part of evangelical philanthropy concerns the work of groups and organizations formed by Protestantism groups, which have a social perception, when not positive, at least not questionable. The study examines how such groups engage in actions to face poverty, by an emphasis on the way they develop their inclusion in this domain. The study examines the inquiry activity of these groups in contexts of sociability (meetings, and seminars) supported by the National Evangelical Network of Social Action (RENAS) and the Center for Assistance and Integral Development (CADI). In these situations, the participants show, create and review plans for their philanthropic work in the name of their confession. In addition, the study gathered data from organizations on the internet, statements to the media, and led interviews. The hypothesis states that, at the intersection between the evangelical increase, in the 80s and 90s, and changes in the state regulation of civil society organizations in democratic governments, including them into the responsibilities of facing the poverty, a public arena arose within which evangelical groups began to act, either through local social actions or to the uphold the social rights. This arena allowed the entrance of these religious groups in the public experience of facing poverty, the increase of their social influence, and the strengthening of their relationship with the State. In this experience, they changed their churches into philanthropic organizations, created organizations, and networks alongside churches, and developed the knowledge of the civic language of their missionary agencies.
