Abstract

Cleft lip and palate are the third most common type of congenital anomalies in the world. To provide a multidisciplinary care to patients, ensuring esthetic, functional and psychologic rehabilitation, it is necessary to know the particularities of this population. It is known that some patients have more risk of developing periodontal disease and that there are sites where it may occur while in others it does not. In individuals with cleft lip and palate this condition should be the same, however there are few studies that evaluate the prevalence and incidence of periodontitis in this population. For this reason, the objective of this study was to evaluate the periodontal condition of individuals with cleft lip and palate. The sample contained 30 individuals with cleft lip, alveolus and palate, under treatment at the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies/USP, in Bauru. The clinical parameters that were considered are: probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), buccal (BR) and lingual gingival recession (LR) of all teeth. The mean for PD was 2,4 mm, of CAL was 2,6 mm, of GI was 0,9, of PI was 1,0, of BR was 0,3 mm and of LR was 0,2 mm. There was a raise of the means for PD and CAL (p=<0,001) and reduction of the means of PI and GI (p-<0,001) over the time, but the variation between the sextants was not statistically significant. Although the worse values for PD and CAL over the time, it was not different between the sextants. This fact suggests that the cleft is not a risk factor to periodontal disease. (AU)
