Abstract

Looking carefully to problems formulated by former generations, and thinking about some dilemmas from the present time, Roberto Schwarz e Beatriz Sarlo to overtop themselves within literary and cultural critique from their countries (Brazil and Argentina). Since 1970¿s until their recent works, they are interfering from different ways in their countries public debate, addressing issues to think modernity and peripheral capitalism challenges. Considering the theoretical relevance of their works, that combine ¿ at the same time - a critical point of view with a sociological one, the present dissertation follows some steps of their intellectual trajectory, and key moments of their theory formulations. In a first analytical movement its presents the Schwarz and Sarlo trajectories, considering social, political, and institutional contexts they were inserted; and are observed some theoretical and methodological main points from which they formulated their critical projects, that analytically articulated critique and society, culture and politics. In a second analytical movement its outlines Schwarz essays on Machado de Assis works, and Sarlo essays where Jorge Luis Borges are a central personage. When their readings of Machado and Borges, from which threads are pushed to understand national context, are putted side by side the challenge is questioning if the peripheral condition structures the interpretations formulated by the critics. Assuming a meaning that is not restricted to the social space, but whether their critics are embedded also as analytical challenge to qualify the modern from a different point of view, that are diverse from those fabled in Western Europe and Anglo-Saxon World (AU)
