Abstract

Through a formal analysis and study of M. I. Lermontov\'s (1814-1841) lyric poetry, taken in the broader context of his works and historical reality, the present project aimed at elucidating the ethical ideal of melancholy in his works. Although the former may be seen more clearly in his poems of political or philosophical nature, whereas the later may be found in those about love or existential subjects, one may nevertheless identify a deep relation between both in what becomes a melancholic ideal of society and the world, present in some of his most famous poems, such as \"Death of the Poet\", \"Borodino\", \"Meditation\", and others. To understand the connection between this ideal and Lermontov\'s literary and historical context, we have intended to articulate the poems\' analysis with the historical concept of Romanticism, duly understood in the light of Russia\'s singularities in Lermontov\'s epoch.
