Abstract

This study liad tlie following purposes: First, to dcscribe morphologic profile, body composition, arm power and agility of wheelchair basketball athletes and sedentary subjects, who had spinal cord injury; second, to compare and verify the existence of signifícant differences of tliese variables between athletes and sedentary spinal injured people; and third, to verify the relationships between agility, arm power, body composition and arm span in athletes and sedentaries. In order to get that, a sample of 20 spinal injured males (10 athletes and 10 sedentaries), 21 and 35 years old and lesion levei between TIO and L4, were evaluated in morphologic and performance aspects. lt was verified as anthropometric measures: total and subcutaneous fat values, arm muscle power through isokinetic evaluation and medicineball throw and values of wheelchair agility performance by an adaptation of the zigzag (est. lt was possible to conclude that: 1) sedentary people were more heterogeneous in several variables, when compared to athletes; 2) for all performance variables and subcutaneous fat, athletes were better than sedentaries; 3) subcutaneous fat concentration and total fat did not interfere in performance for athlctcs, but had a strong negative relationship with the arm muscle power for sedentary pcoplc; 4) tliere was a significant negative relationship bclwcen the time in wheelchair agility tcsl and arm muscle power only for the athleles (AU)
