Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the Brazilian trajectory of the Russian-born Italian physicist Gleb Vassilievich Wataghin. Specifically, it aims to understand the role of this scientist intellectual in the formation of the first generations of physicists at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, Science and Letters of the University of São Paulo, under the science diplomacy and internationalization prism. The thesis analyzed Wataghins tactics in front of the strategies developed by the power holders, allied to the pressures from other social fields, aiming to understand how his actions in different universe of possibles participated in the design of the internationalization process of the FFCL Physics Department. Taking into consideration the diversity of political changes between the countries in which Wataghin interacted with the scientific fields, in the time he remained in Brazil, the hypothesis of the thesis is that his tactics changed because the modifications in the politic-diplomatic fields. The document set in which the historical narrative is based is varied, it consists in Wataghins correspondence; institutional documents; newspapers of the period; diplomatic documents; interviews; scientific papers; accountability documents; reports; letters; and notebooks. Among the results, it is observed that the most important Wataghins tactic was the building of a social network with physicists, scientists of other areas, diplomats, institutions, and politicians. The networks activation and maintenance changed in according to the diplomatic relations established between the countries. In political hostility times, other elements came into the networks, such as friendship and kinship relations. The network consolidation result was the Physics Department internationalization and the international circulation of the first generations. Even after Wataghins return to Italy in 1949, he was still participating in the life of Brazilian physicists and institutions, because Brazil effectively entered his social network. (AU)
