Abstract

This dissertation aims to understand how trust in Bitcoin as a popular representation of money is formed, and how formal and informal institutions help or hinder the consolidation of this process. Based on literature review and systematization about trust and money, I analyzed 39 interviews with Bitcoin users and enthusiasts, who interpret the technology as a kind of global currency or as an instrument with the potential to become a currency in the future. At the end of the data analysis, I came up with a model that explains how trust in Bitcoin as a popular representation of currency is formed, and also how institutions such as law and regulation, the state, market organizations, Bitcoin technical governance model, and users and enthusiasts\' communities help or hinder the consolidation of this process. According to the model presented, trust in Bitcoin as a cultural representation of money manifests itself in three distinct ways. They are metaphorically referred to as 1) \"The consumer\", 2) \"The cautious\", and 3) \"The revolutionary\". Each of these forms of trust arises from different everyday perceptions of how institutions in their broadest sense assist in suspending uncertainty about the practical use of Bitcoin in everyday life. Contrary to what has been found in the literature on trust and currency, the identification of the three forms of trust manifests simultaneously, but with variations in intensity, over the entire sample.
