Abstract

This doctorate research aimed a psychological exam of testimonies of hibakushas and may be considered a continuation of the master degree research entitled Hiroshima: the atomic catastrophe and its witnesses. During the masters it was made necessary to firstly recognize the historical and political facts that led to the development of the atomic bombs in the context of the Second World War, recognition which was also made by a number of survivors who were trying to understand and give form to the very event theyve witnessed. This historical and political study together with the Freudian psychoanalytic theory of trauma made it possible, at that time, a first analysis of testimonies of hibakushas in favour of an exam that avoided psychological reductionisms. In that occasion, approximately two hundred testimonies of atomic bomb survivors were studied and it was noticed the recurrence of three psychological phenomena that deeply mark the memories of the deponents: trauma, guilt and shame. These phenomena, which could not be properly studied during the masters, became the object of this doctorate research, and point to the fact that, to a proper understanding of these memories it is imperative to exam these stories not only through a psychoanalytic approach, but also in the context of Japanese culture and through the lessons of Social Psychology. This investigation put some light on the following paradoxes lived by the victims: trauma and meaning, guilt and forgiveness, shame and honour (AU)
