Abstract

Inserted in the field of history of political thought my research has as its object the work of the Paraguayan sociologist Mauricio Schvartzman (1939-1997). Based on an exploratory study of his thought I try to demonstrate how this author would have contributed to the translation of Marxism in Paraguay and, consequently, also in the Latin American context, in a more general way. To carry out this research I make use of a key concept that allows me to think methodically about my object, the nationalization of Marxism. This concept proposed in parallel by the Bra- zilian Bernardo Ricupero and the Bolivian Luis Tapia, authors of Caio Prado Júnior and the nationalization of Marxism in Brazil (2000) and The Production of Local Knowledge: History and Politics in the Work of René Zavaleta (2002), respectively, understands the need for trans- lation of Marxist theory in order to understand the national and regional specificities of the analyzed reality (RICUPERO,2000). From this category I intend to demonstrate how Mauricio Schvartzman appropriates the national reality and the Marxist tradition to propose an original interpretation of Paraguayan society, and what are his contributions to Latin American Marx- ism. Having said this, it is important to emphasize that in order to fulfill these objectives I will focus on the reconstitution of the interpretation of Paraguayan society proposed by Schvartz- man, from three main axes: i) formation of the State and civil society; ii) class structure and iii) authoritarianism and democracy, these three axes that articulate the author's interpretation will allow me to work on different Schvartzman's writings capturing the continuities and disconti- nuities between them. For this I will focus on his two main works: Contributions to the study of Paraguay society (1989) and Myht and Mourning: The speech of the pre-transition to De- mocracy (1989), other works of the author will be taken into account, but in order to assist in the reconstruction of the contours of his thinking (AU)
