Abstract

The thesis starts with an overview of Brazilian capitalist development since the mid-1950s, establishing a discussion of the concept of development related to the progress of productive forces induced by the State and Private Companies (national and transnational). To emphasize the case of Pernambuco, it considers the context of regional integration after the creation of the Superintendência para o Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (SUDENE). Then, draws a specific timeline under which some features and the main determinants of the productive structure and trade relations of Pernambuco's economy are appointed. Besides the traditional macroeconomic approach, the study proposes an analytical refinement in terms of fractions of capital, with the aim of emphasizing the operation of the main companies of Pernambuco over the last fifty years, by using categories such as participation in sales, control and origin of the capital and sector of activity. It also illustrates the enterprises that emerged, disappeared or were consolidated along the path of the economic development of Pernambuco, relating this approach to the macroeconomic overview held before. In the case of local enterprises (originated in Pernambuco), the study identifies the 'original' bases of accumulation and focuses on the patterns of transfiguration that guided local business strategies in a competitive environment defined by the national productive integration process and other determinants at the supra-local scale (AU)
