Abstract

Characterized as a study of meta-research, the research on scientific research, this dissertation had as central objective to make a review of the academic production expressed in theses and dissertations on the theme of Medium Cities and Medium-sized Cities in three Stricto Sensu Graduate Programs in Geography: from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT) and the Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences (IGCE), both from the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), and the Graduate Program in Human Geography from the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) of the University of São Paulo (USP), in the period from 1960 to 2019, undertaking methodological reflections and quantitative and qualitative assessments on the identified collection. In order to that we developed a specific methodology that adopts bibliometric procedures and techniques for the identification, collection and analysis of information, confronting elements to identify general and particular aspects among the graduate programs, even as a set of discoveries obtained during the development of research. According to the scope of the investigation, we identified a total of 114 works in this period. The graduate programs showed a wide quantitative difference, with emphasis on FCT / UNESP, which accounted for 58% of the collection, followed by IGCE / UNESP, with 27% and FFLCH / USP, with 17%. The obtained results indicated the following aspects: distinct historical series investigated in each program; wide growth in total scientific production among the three programs from the decade of the 2000s; the increase of the number of researches on Medium Cities and Medium-sized Cities in the transition from the 20th to the 21st century; higher percentage of dissertations (54%) compared to the theses (46%) identified; prominence in the number of medium cities and medium-sized cities in São Paulo, Brazil, taken as the most spatial section studied. Regarding bibliometric aspects, the data indicated the highest percentage of works identified by the search terms present only in the Abstract field, followed by the triad Title-Abstract-Keywords or composing one of the keywords of the work. In view of the integrated analysis, and always considering the determined search and selection criteria, we could conclude that the PPGG of FCT/UNESP stands out in terms of quantity, variety of themes, processes and phenomena addressed, in the largest set of cities surveyed and in the comparative aspect it promotes in its investigations.
