Abstract

aEPEC is classified according to its adhesion in vitro pattern in localized-like (LAL), aggregative (AA), diffuse (DA), and indeterminate adherence patterns as well as nonadherent (NA) strain. Since some aEPEC display the adherence phenotype observed for other pathotypes of E. coli, the aim was to investigate, in aEPEC, the presence of adhesin genes present in other pathogenic E. coli and analyze, by comparative proteomic analyses, the protein extracts isolated from BA320 (LAL), Ec292/84 (AA), 9100-83 (DA) and BA4013 (NA). We observed the presence of different filamentous structures anchored to aEPEC surface and presence of fimA, fimH, papA, ecpA, ldaH, pilS, daaC, sfpA, lpfAO113 genes and polymorphic variants (lpfA1 and lpfA2). By proteomic analyses the proteins H-NS, OmpX, FucU, MglB were identified and a putative filamentous protein was found in aEPEC with the phenotypes LAL, AA and DA. We conclude that the genes encoding type 1 fimbriae and ECP pilus are highly prevalent in aEPEC, and the proteins identified can be associated to bacterial adhesion processes. (AU)
