Abstract

The taxonomic review and cladistic analysis of Dicrania LePeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Melolonthinae), previously with 40 species are presented. After this study, the genus comprises 81 South American species. A generic synonymy is proposed to monotypic Canestera Saylor, 1938 syn. nov. for Dicrania and a new combination to the species previously placed on the former genus, D. marshalli (Saylor, 1938) comb. nov. Plectris pellita (Eschscholtz, 1822) comb. nov. is transferred from Dicrania to Plectris LePeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828. Three species are revalidated: Dicrania badia Burmeister, 1855 reval., formerly synonymy of D. castaneipennis Chevrolat, 1844, Dicrania quadricristata Guérin-Méneville, 1844 reval., formerly synonymy of D. velutina Guérin-Méneville, 1830, and D. nigricans Laporte, 1832 reval., formerly synonymy of D. flavoscutellata Laporte, 1832. Three synonymies are confirmed: D. femorata (Mannerheim, 1829) for D. appendiculata (Mannerheim, 1829), D. lasiopus Burmeister, 1855 for D. nigricans Laporte, 1832, and D. luridipennis (Laporte, 1832) for D. nigra LePeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828. Ten new synonymies are proposed: D. morio Kraatz, 1895 syn. nov. and D. rugosipennis Blanchard, 1850 syn. nov. for D. velutina, D. plaumanni Frey, 1972 syn. nov. for D. notaticollis Moser, 1921, D. popei Frey, 1972 syn. nov. for D. setosicollis Frey, 1942, D. metzi Kraatz, 1895 syn. nov. and D. unicolor fulvicollis Kraatz, 1895 syn. nov. for D. unicolor Kraatz, 1895, D. piligera Blanchard, 1850 syn. nov. for D. subvestita Guérin-Méneville, 1844, D. flavoscutellata viridescens Moser, 1919 syn. nov. for D. flavoscutellata Laporte, 1832, D. squamulata Moser, 1919 syn. nov., formerly synonymy of D. subvestita for D. hirtipes Laporte, 1832, and D. hirsuta Frey, 1972 syn. nov. for Dasyus collaris LePeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828. Forty eigth species are described: D. abdita sp. nov., D. albiserosa sp. nov., D. armatipennis sp. nov., D. atra sp. nov., D. bellicosa sp. nov., D. bilix sp. nov., D. bilopha sp. nov., D. concolor sp. nov., D. confusa sp. nov., D. crassa sp. nov., D. cruralis sp. nov., D. crassa sp. nov., D. denticulata sp. nov., D. dubia sp. nov., D. echinosa sp. nov., D. euryta sp. nov., D. fallax sp. nov., D. flava sp. nov., D. glabra sp. nov., D. gracilis sp. nov., D. hexaphylla sp. nov., D. hirta sp. nov., D. idiota sp. nov., D. imitatrix sp. nov., D. inermis sp. nov., D. inops sp. nov., D. lanosa sp. nov., D. leptonyx sp. nov., D. mendax sp. nov., D. mimosa sp. nov., D. minuta sp. nov., D. neglecta sp. nov., D. nigripennis sp. nov., D. notosia sp. nov., D. nudipes sp. nov., D. perfida sp. nov., D. pinnigera sp. nov., D. punctata sp. nov., D. pusillanima sp. nov., D. quadricornis sp. nov., D. rugosa sp. nov., D. serrata sp. nov., D. tetraphylla sp. nov., D. tomentosa sp. nov., D. tridentata sp. nov., D. una sp. nov., D. unguiculata sp. nov., D. villosa sp. nov., D. zephyria sp. nov. Lectotypes to 29 species and neotype to D. hirtipes and D. flavoscutellata are designed. The previously unknown female of D. ebenina Blanchard, 1850, D. laevipennis Moser, 1921, D. marshalli, D. quadricristata, D. peruana Frey, 1972, D. similis Frey, 1972, D. subvestita, and male of D. badia are first time characterized. Keys to species, biological notes, geographic distribution, new occurrences and the first phylogenetic hypothesis to Dicrania based on cladistics analysis are provided. Furthermore, a new phylogenetic hypothesis to Macrodactylini is presented based on the type species of the genera. As resulting of this analysis, Dicrania is monophyletic and Macrodactylini as polyphyletic. To correct and clarify the group systematic and recover the natural condition of the group, some formerly synonymies of Macrodactylini are revalidated, and the tribe receives a new view, Macrodactylini sensu novum. Five tribes are revalidated: Barybini Gutiérez, 1952, reval., emend.; Ceraspini Burmeister, 1855, reval.; Clavipalpini Lacordaire, 1856, reval.; Dicraniini Burmeister, 1855, reval., emend.; Plectrini Burmeister, 1855, reval.
