Abstract

The main purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the phonological phenomena of Portuguese used in the Archaic period, investigating specifically the rhotic consonants (represented by the segments <r> and <rr>) in the beginning and end of syllable contexts, in 250 medieval Galician-Portuguese songs. The trill consonants are an interesting theme in a mosaic of phonological segments in Ancient Portuguese, since there are many controversies in literature about their phonological status, not only nowadays, but also in past periods of the language. Furthermore, there are few works developed in this area regarding this topic. Our aim was to verify if in the Portuguese troubadour stage there were two rhotic phonemes in opposition, or if in the phonological level the sound represented by <rr> could be interpreted as a geminate variant of the <r> spelling. The geminate segments comprise a succession of two elements, given that one of them completes the coda position of the previous syllable and the other lays in the beginning of the following syllable. The data analysis was made as of non-linear phonological models, especially the auto segmental and metric theories. The chosen methodology was based on the observation of the possibility of variety in the trill consonants spelling, aiming at establishing existing relations between letters and sounds, and on the study of the behavior of <rr> double in position of onset, coda and between vowels. The examination of the collected sample showed that in between-vowels context, the double rhotic <rr> can be considered geminate, through a phonological point of view, because it occupies two positions in the syllable composition. In the beginning of the word, even in cases of hyposegmentation, the consonant <rr> does not represent gemination, given that it represents a spelling variant for <r>. In the onset context, following a syllable ending in consonant, the double trill also represents a spelling variant, since its duration is the same as the simple rhotic. We acknowledge, through established reflection, the existence of a unique rhotic phoneme in the medieval stage of Portuguese, tap /ɾ/, which, from a phonological perspective, presents two variants, a simple one (<r> or <rr>), and a geminate (<rr>). This dissertation determined that it is possible to obtain certain information regarding the pronunciation of trill consonants in Ancient Portuguese against spelling occurrences and reported some changings through which the Portuguese rhotic consonants passed along the language constitution.
