Abstract

The reactive optimal power ow can be formulated mathematically as a non convex, non linear, constrained optimization problem with discrete and continuous variables, which aims to seek the best point of operation of an electric system, according to some objective. In many works of the literature, the discrete variables of the Reactive optimal power ow problem are considered as continuous and the solution obtained is adjusted to the nearest discrete value of the set of preset discrete values. Such an approach mischaracterize the actual representation of the problem associated with the electrical system. This work, for handling the discrete variables, a strategy was adopted to transform the discrete problem in a sequence of continuous problems using a sinusoidal function, which forces the variables to assume discrete values. In order to solve the sequence of continuous problems, this work proposed a new approach that uses the primal-dual interior point penalty method to solve the reactive optimal power ow problem with discrete control variables. In this proposed approach the inequality constraints are transformed into equalities by adding the slack variables and auxiliary variables, which are handled by the logarithmic barrier function and l1 penalty function, respectively, while the remaining equality constraints are handled by means of Lagrange multipliers method. Numerical tests carried out with the IEEE 30, 57, 118 and 300 bus electrical systems indicate that the method is e cient to solve of the reactive optimal power ow problem with discrete control variables (AU)
