Abstract

Checklists works are essential for the biota description of any locality. The present study had the aim to investigate the faunistic composition and community structure of caridean shrimps associated to the subtidal consolidated substrate in the two island areas of the São Paulo state. Both sites selected for sampling the specimens were sighted in order to elucidate the few information that is currently provide about this benthic community in protected areas, such as the Laje de Santos and Vitória Island Marine Parks, which makes it difficult to create management and conservation protocols of the areas. Expeditions were carried out for samples in June/15 and June/16 period, using active search techniques by SCUBA diving and installation of substrate of artificial refuge in the rocky sublittoral. At the laboratory, all species were identified and recorded as male, female or ovigerous female sex. The total of 323 specimens were sampled in the two regions, with 13 species composing the caridean shrimps fauna on the Vitoria Island, distributed in four families and six genera. 12 species of three families and five genera were identified for the Laje de Santos. From the total of 17 registered species in all work, with similar community structure for Laje de Santos and Vitoria Island, the Alpheidae family was, by far, the most representative, with 12 species sampled, followed by Palaemonidae with three species. Alpheus formorsus and Cuapetes americanus were the dominant species in both regions. With the results observed on the distributions of caridean shrimps throughout the year, it is suggested that these species present a spatial distribution, but that they are found in the islands during the whole year. The information registered in this study are unprecedented and important for the scientific community and for the legal responsible for the management and protection of the two areas. (AU)
