Abstract

The purpose of this project is to observe the ability of alfa-alumina membranes, specially prepared for this work, to immobilize yeast cells and their performance through ethanol fermentation. Alumina was chosen as a solid support for yeast cells because it is an inorganic, chemically inert and porous material, not harmful for yeast, relatively easy and cheap to produce. Its strength, stability, the possible control of porosity and its life larger than that of the organic supports commonly used to immobilize yeast cells, were also characteristics that recommended the use of alumina membranes. The assays were carried out with fermentation media prepared with liquid sugar, blackstrap molasses and sugarcane juice in batch. In parallel a few assays with suspended cells - were carried out using the same media to compare the fermentation performance of both suspended and immobilized yeast cells. (AU)
