| Abstract | |
Urban agriculture (UA) is integrated into the urban ecosystem, has a multifunctional character and provides good environmental, social and economic results. Currently, AU is gaining prominence in the Brazilian and global scenario, and it is important to understand the existing initiatives and demands so that public policies can be implemented. In this sense, the main objective was to understand and analyze the practices of urban agriculture in the city of Porto Ferreira/SP. The study that originated the dissertation was conducted based on bibliographical research, production of data from a primary source through the application of a form with urban farmers in the municipality, in order to understand the role and profile of the researched actors; interviews were also carried out with seedling traders and with the municipal government of Porto Ferreira. It was concluded that, in the case of Porto Ferreira, urban gardens promote the social inclusion of families mainly involved, groups of low-income people, unemployed, elderly and women, since, in the universe of 60 urban farmers interviewed, 55 use the urban gardens for subsistence or sales in the garden, two sell at the municipal fair and three sell directly to supermarkets in the municipality. We conclude that it is necessary to promote and recognize the potential of urban gardens as a tool for generating complementary income, social interaction of the urban farmers involved and, above all, the cultural recovery of food production for their own consumption.
