Abstract

The contingent a priori phenomenon emerged with Kripke, when he pointed out that we are able to know, in specific cases, contingent a priori sentences. After this idea was incorporated into the tradition, some philosophers perceived a great relation between the kripkean examples and the indexical terms. Gareth Evans, for example, argued that such a relation would reveal that kripkean cases would be only superficial and thus not problematic. However, a consequence of Evans¿ theory is that much of our knowledge involving indexicals becomes trivial. Within this debate, the purpose of this text is to explore the contingent a priori, the contingency categories by Evans, and the main consequences of this debate (AU)
