Abstract

Interactions between plants and herbivore insects encompass more than 40% of terrestrial biodiversity, in which plants are resources, providing food and shelter for insects. The understanding of how these interactions are organized and their effects on plants are important steps to comprehend the processes responsible for the generation and maintenance of biodiversity. Many insect species are frugivorous and live at least part of their lives associated with fruits, consuming pulp and/or seeds. In this study, we investigated the host use by frugivorous insect guilds and direct and indirect effects of their infestation on plants. In the first chapter we explored host use of Myrtaceae fruits by distinct insect guilds and how these interactions vary across space and time. In the second chapter we measured the effects of infestation by distinct insect guilds on the morphological and chemical traits of Psidium cattleianum fruits. In the third chapter, we tested the effect of infestation by frugivorous insects on seed germination and on survival and biomass of Psidium cattleianum seedlings. Finally, in the fourth chapter we evaluated how interactions between pre-dispersal seed predator insects and plants from several families vary across space and time and which traits of plants and insects have influence on these interactions (AU)
