Abstract

This research focuses on the relationship between panic disorder, panic attacks, and breath, in three different situations: in the clinical experiments that enacted the panic disorder for the first time, in the 1960s; in a clinical research laboratory called the Panic and Breathing Laboratory based at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; and in an eight-week Mindfulness course at Centro Mente Aberta, linked to the Federal University of São Paulo. Through the mobilization of different materials, such as diagnostic manuals, handouts, practical courses, scientific articles, and even my own experience, I demonstrate how panic and its treatments are enacted in these places through everyday practices, mainly through breathing practices. Thus, through a broader movement in which panic and breathing are related, there is also the production of diagnoses, treatments, and exchanges between different fields of knowledge (AU)
