Abstract

This thesis discusses the gender dimension of the debates on rights that took place in Rio de Janeiro's daily press in the early twentieth century. By selecting episodes from the Correio da Manhã, this research examines how men and women mobilized the concepts of male and female, exploring its uncertainties and changes in that historical context, with different objectives: to justify its intervention in the daily newspapers, construct arguments and question the legitimacy of their opponents. It analyses how these people interpreted the impacts of the Republic in their own lives, expressing expectations or recriminations regarding the changes that came with the new regime. From the trajectory of some writers and the possibilities open to the participation of readers, it discusses the use of the press for claiming rights and how conceptions of women's work and feminism have been elaborated in this context (AU)
