Abstract | |
The central philosophical element in Thomas Kuhn's classic The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962) is the concept of paradigm. Nevertheless, after its publication, the use of the word 'paradigm' generated many of doubts and criticisms on the kuhnian intention about its meanings. In the last paragraph of chapter IX of the Structure, Kuhn wrote that the concept of paradigm had been articulated as a constitutive element in science and the scientific communities. However, from his previous analysis, he started exploring the role of paradigms in the constitution "of nature". The detailed study of Structure’s chapter IX was chosen to investigate the "thesis of the constitution of nature by paradigms" derived from the final assertions of chapter IX. This dissertation contemplates a double theoretical movement. In the first one, an analysis was done of the own viability of Kuhn's formulations as arguments for the phenomenon of the change world view in scientific communities. In the second one, the phenomenon of the change world view is used as an access route to the thesis of the constitution of nature by paradigms. In this dissertation, the phenomenon of the change world view and the thesis of the constitution of nature by paradigms are linked to each other. However, the results indicate that the study of the "thesis of the constitution of nature by paradigms" may be carried out independently of the phenomenon of the change world view. The analysis of this issue involves a detailed scrutiny of three central concepts in the texts of Kuhn: the concepts of nature and of scientific world, besides, of course, the concept of paradigm itself (AU) | |
