The present research proposes to investigate the in which manner the Italian composer Francesco Geminiani contributed to the consolidation process of the instrumental music style practiced in England throughout the period delimited by his residence in the Isle. We will analyze the meanings of taste and style in the eighteenth-century philosophical and musical thought, aiming to understand their continental and insular correspondences. We conceive the concept of good taste, its relation to empiricism and its ways of transmission. The analysis of this information enables us to verify that the reunion of Italian represented by Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) and French represented by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) musical styles implies also on the emulation not only of their characteristics, but also of their authoritative models. English instrumental music, with its singular history, will be approached since the seventeenth-century in order to enable us to understand the manner in which its representative genres consort, fantasia-suite, division-musick, trio sonata and sonata , its auctoritates and its didascalic corpus guided the road do emulation travelled by Geminiani. The study of his chamber music sonatas for violin and pieces for the harpsichord , as well as his musical treatises allows us to perceive him as an authoritative model in the context of the consolidation of English instrumental music between the 1714 and 1762.
