Abstract

Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762) was one of the most important italian violinists and composers of the 18th century. After his studies with Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) and Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), he moved to England, where he would remain most part of his life. Geminiani can be considered the main eighteenth century author to describe the Italian performing practice, being the most important one to immortalize the important Italian violin tradition, started with Corelli, developed by Vivaldi wich, in the 19th century, will reach Paganini, the highest point of musical virtuosism. In his last twenty years he published six music treatises, considered today the most important theoric references to the knowledge of the 18th century Italian music: Rules for playing in a true Taste, op. 8 (1748), A Treatise of Good Taste in the Art of Musick (1749), The Art of Playing on the Violin, op. 9 (1751), Guida Armonica, op. 10 (1752), The Art of Acompaniament, op. 11 (1754) e The Art of Playing the Guitar or Cittra (1760). This work proposes the first joint translation of the whole Geminiani's theorical work to the Portuguese, followed by comments. They are short works wich mainly discusses around the musical good taste; their content is mostly interrelated. This way, it will be possible to understand more deeply the referencial works, wich, more than be focused on important matters about 18th century English music, discuss aspects of Italian music theory and practise, predominant in almost all 18th century European courts.
